FIND AND DO GOOD WORK

Read: Proverbs 6:6–11

Meditation Verse:

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

Work has existed since the beginning of creation. When God created Adam, He placed him in the Garden of Eden to till and take care of it—Adam was, in essence, the first landscaper. After the flood, Noah became a farmer and planted a vineyard. Abraham was a successful rancher and herdsman. His son Isaac followed in his footsteps as a farmer and shepherd. David tended sheep. Paul the Apostle worked as a tentmaker so he wouldn’t be a burden to the people he preached to. Even Jesus Christ, while on earth, worked as a carpenter alongside His earthly father, Joseph.

Hard work is honorable and pleasing to God.

2 Thessalonians 3:10 says, “If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.” Paul was addressing people who chose idleness and became busybodies instead of contributing meaningfully. Ecclesiastes 11:6 urges us to “sow our seed in the morning and not withhold in the evening,” because we don’t know which effort will prosper—or if both will.

1 Thessalonians 4:11–12 encourages believers to lead quiet lives, mind their business, and work with their own hands, “that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.”

Your work is the primary way God provides for your needs. But it also gives your life structure, purpose, and dignity. Through work, we find:

  • A sense of identity

  • Social connection

  • Daily structure

  • Purposeful activity

  • And a way to contribute to the greater good

If you’re currently not engaged in any meaningful work, Proverbs 6:6–11 offers wise instruction:

“Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise… she provides her supplies in summer and gathers food in harvest… A little sleep, a little slumber… so shall your poverty come on you like a prowler.”

So, find good work. Do it well.
Whatever your hand finds to do—do it with all your might.
