COMFORTABLE DYSFUNCTION
Read: Deuteronomy 1:1–8
Meditation Verse:
“The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying: ‘You have dwelt long enough at this mountain.’” (Deuteronomy 1:6)
While the Israelites were journeying to the Promised Land, they camped for a time in the land of Moab. Then God spoke:
“You have stayed at this mountain long enough. It’s time to break camp and move on…” (Deuteronomy 1:6–8, NLT)
A camp is a temporary structure—used by soldiers, refugees, or travelers. It is built for a purpose and for a season, not permanence. But many of us pitch tents in places God only meant for transition.
Some relationships, roles, or routines were meant to serve a purpose, teach a lesson, or shape a season—but not last forever. When we linger in them too long, we enter into what can be called comfortable dysfunction.
A comfortable dysfunction feels safe because it’s familiar—even when it’s no longer fruitful. It’s the friendship you’ve outgrown, the job that drains you, or the habits that keep you stagnant. You know deep down there’s more—but moving forward feels risky. So you stay.
But you cannot grow if you won’t go.
God told the Israelites:
“Look, I am giving you this land. Now go in and occupy it.”
How do you know it’s time to move?
-
You feel restless or stifled
-
You no longer connect with the same circles
-
You’re uninterested in what used to excite you
-
Your soul is whispering: “There’s more”
This isn’t rebellion. It’s realignment. God is calling you higher. Your taste buds are changing because your spirit is evolving.
So today, hear His voice:
“You have dwelt long enough at this mountain. Break camp. Move on.”
Will you choose comfort over courage? Familiarity over purpose?
Or will you step out into what God has already promised?
Choose wisely.
