SAY WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE INSTEAD

Read: PROVERBS 18:21

Meditation verse:

“I have made you a father of many nations, in the presence of Him whom he believed- God who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did” (Romans 4:17).

The late Kenneth Hagin, founder of Kenneth Hagin Ministries and Rhema Bible Training Centre once shared the story of a woman who came to him to request that he prayed for her son who was living a wayward life. He returned home daily at 4am, including Sundays and showed no interest in the things of God. He said she seemed surprised when he told her he would not pray but requested that she return home and stop telling him what was wrong with him, but rather start speaking out what she wanted to see happen in his life. He was to meet the women several months later, and she shared how the amazing transformation that had taken place in the son’s life. She said a few months after she began following his instruction, her son returned home one early morning and asked to follow her to church, but she refused, saying he needed to rest since he was tired. But he insisted on going. This was to happen a few more times until he stopped his wayward lifestyle and was now a brand-new creature.

When we see things in our children’s ways that do not align with our values, particularly for Christian parents, we are tempted to correct, rebuke, preach to or even threaten them with consequences. But as we may already have noticed, we hardly get anywhere with these methods. Kenneth Hagin’s story is quite instructive. Some of us may need to adopt his method. Stop saying what is wrong with the child and start saying what you want to see happen. Proverbs 18:21 says “death and life are in the power of your tongue and they that love it will eat the fruit thereof”. Realign that child’s life with the power in your tongue. Speak God’s word over his or her life. Even if you cannot see any change, continue speaking. The word works, so work it. Decorate your home and family with your words.
