AGEING GRACEFULLY

Read: DEUTERONOMY 5: 32-33

Meditation verse:“Bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come” (1 Tim 4:8).

There are lots of self-help books and videos loaded with prescriptions on how to look years younger than your age. We are instructed to exercise daily, eat low fat, balanced meals, drink tons of water to detoxify our systems, get enough rest or sleep, abstain from stressful situations and do our annual health checks. Whilst these instructions can be useful and beneficial, they are no guarantees to either a longer life or one devoid of sickness and pain. Supposedly healthy people have been known to slump suddenly and die and we have seen athletes collapse during sporting events.

God gives power to the weary and increases the strength of those who have no might. He can renew your youth and increase the length of your days. Here are some of His promises over your life:

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint –Isaiah 40:30-31

He satisfies your mouth with good things so that your youth is renewed, like the eagle’s –Ps 103:5.

He says that He will satisfy you with long life and show you His salvation –Ps 91:16

He declares that you shall bear fruits even in old age and you shall be fresh and flourishing –Ps 92:14

However, God’s promises are usually tied to conditions. Deuteronomy 5:33 states that “you shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess”. Eccl 12:1 says that you should remember the one who created you in the days of your youth, so that He would remember you during the difficult and dark years of ageing. A life without

God will lead to a lonely and unfulfilled old age, full of regrets. A life centred around and lived for God will bring fulfilment in your later years. Even if sickness or difficulties arise, you will glow in the assurance that God is upholding you and will eventually carry you safely to the other side when your time on earth is up.

Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?

Jesus says in Mathew 11:28; “come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. No matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, this invitation is for you. Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart; all you need to do is invite Him in, by believing and receiving Him.

Are you ready? Here’s a prayer you can say right now:

Dear Lord, I acknowledge that I am a sinner in need of grace. I believe that Jesus died to set me free from my sins. Thank You Jesus for dying to save me. Please forgive me for all my sins and come into my heart. Be my Lord and Saviour. Fill me with Your Spirit and enable me to live for You from now onwards, in Jesus’ name, Amen
